It is no secret that the use of table salt has several harmful health effects. Medical professionals have urged us to limit the intake of this white additive since decades. Sea salts unfortunately are becoming more and more polluted as the oceans are filled up with toxins. But did you know not all of them are created equal? One such healthier alternative to table salt is the Himalayan salt.
Let’s find out the benefits of Himalayan salt but before that let’s discuss what is this new salt and why do we care.
What is Himalayan Salt?
Himalayan salt is truly a unique salt of it’s own. It is also known as pink salt. “Himalayan Pink Salt” is named after the iron rich pink clay ore found in the Himalayas. It is rock salt or halite found from the Punjab region of Pakistan about 190 miles from the Himalayas. This region has one of the richest salt fields in the entire world, and they are very ancient. Himalayan pink salt comes from salt mines 5,000 feet deep below the Himalayan mountain range.
How is Himalayan salt better than the Table Salt?
Himalayan pink salt is a much more balanced and healthy choice in comparison to the common table salt. Table salt companies managed to crack down all 85 – 90 nutrients found in sea salt and sell them to the food processing giants. What’s left behind is just Sodium Chloride and sold to us as table salt. By marketing it as “a salt that can prevent goiter” and adding some inexpensive iodine to it there is a huge market for this.
The usage of this salt is not only limited to culinary but also includes therapeutic usage.
Top Benefits of Himalayan salt
1. Packed with Nutrients
Himalayan salt has so much more than its pretty pink color. It is packed with 84 minerals and trace elements including calcium, magnesium, potassium, copper and iron. The taste is pretty much similar to our regular table salt however it is naturally occurring without any chemical processing or refinement. So no compromise on your taste buds!
2. Salt Therapy
Himalayan salt is widely used in salt therapy. Ancient healers and philosophers recommended salt inhalation for the respiratory system and health problems. The benefits of salt therapy a.k.a halotherapy are wide-ranging. Salt levels affect our cell activity, energy and blood sugar levels. Because of it’s inherent properties salt is antimicrobial, and antibacterial. Salt therapy supports immune, nervous and lymphatic systems. Skin conditions such as psoriasis, rashes, eczema, acne also get cured by salt therapy. Researches have shown that the therapy is highly effective in curing chronic bronchitis
3. As as Air purifier
Salt lamps make a beautiful, affordable and healthy addition to any room. Salt lamps applaud your home with air purifying properties. How? The salt attracts water vapor to it as well as air pollutants. The water vapor however, evaporates due the lamp’s heat. The evaporation then produces negative ions. Pollen, dust, dirt, pollutants, and allergens in the air all carry a positive charge, and that is how they can be suspended in the air. The negative ions neutralize these positive ions so they can no longer be airborne. For best results, leave your lamp on 24/7. The lamp itself lasts indefinitely, but the bulb will need to be occasionally replaced.
4. Detox Baths
Adding Himalayan salt to a bath creates a rejuvenating, detoxing, and relaxing at-home spa. They help melt away the day’s worries and pressures, allowing you to switch off your mind and enjoy some peace. Because Himalayan salt is so much power packed with nutrients it instills the skin and body with minerals.
A 2012 study, carried out at the University of California, indicates that the average person is regularly being exposed to cancerous levels of toxins like arsenic, dioxins, and DDE – with 100% of children tested exceeding cancer benchmark levels for these chemicals. When we bathe in Himalayan salt it helps to pull out some of these toxins from our body. Patients with Arthritis and stiff joints will benefit immensely from this detox bath. Salt baths calms down our nerves. People who have trouble sleeping at night should definitely give this a shot before they try to sleep.
Tip: Add lavender essential oil to promote sleeping power.
Where to buy?
It is a bit hard to find Himalayan salt in some local shop since it is not widely adopted plus it costs more to buy Himalayan salt than regular salt considering it’s availability and benefits. If you wish to buy online I found the following products to be good. I have also posted the lamp if anyone wishes to buy:
As with everything Himalayan salt is great when consumed in moderation because ultimately it is still a salt. An adult requires roughly 2300 mg of sodium however, if you suffer from any ailments like high blood pressure the limit goes down to 1500 mg. I have no problems in recommending the use of Himalayan salt as a healthier alternative to table salt. I have tried this pink salt and loved it. Are you considering to switch as well?
