What exactly is Shilajit?
Shilajit is a resinous and nutrient-rich biomass has been touted for millennia by Ayurveda as the best carrier of energy and nutrition into the human body. Modern science has recently proven this by identifying fulvicacids, which are found in abundance in Shilajit, as the main substances responsible for energy production within the cell.
It comprises of over 85 minerals that the human body needs to function optimally.
Because of the several benefits that the herb provides, it has been found to be consumed for thousands of years in Asia and particularly India.
Infact the herb is so ancient that if you remember Ramayan, this was the same herb that Lord Hanuman fetched from the Himalayas to cure Lakshman when he was seriously injured in the battle against Indrajit.
(if you are not from India Ramayana is an ancient epic which narrates the struggle of the divine prince Rama to rescue his wife Sita from the demon king Ravana – do read it if you find it interesting :))
According to Ayurvedic texts there is no disease in the world which cannot be treated by Shilajit if given by the administrator properly with other drugs
Top benefits of Shilajit
1. Low testosterone level
It is a natural booster of both testosterone and follicule-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels. There are several animal and human studies conducted and they point to the fact that it improves sperm count and motility in males.
A study was conducted on few men and at the end of the trial period, sperm counts in the men increased by more than 60%, and sperm activity improved by 12% or more. So if you recently had a test and found that your sperms counts are low than average this is a nice herb to try before do try any complicated allopathy drug.
2. Protects the heart
A recent study using animal models tested how well Shilajit protects the heart. The animals who received the herb showed less cardiovascular damage, with researchers concluding the effect must come from more than simply its antioxidant activity.
3. Slows an aging brain
Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter that is critical for brain function, memory and attention. Stress and aging decrease levels of acetycholine, and shilajit has been found to inhibit the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine
3. As an Adaptogen
It has been classified as an Adaptogen, which means it helps the body adapt or process both internal and external stressors. It has been used for thousands of years to fight stress and fatigue, while rejuvenating and regenerating tired cells.
4. Alzheimer’s disease
It has a great potential in the prevention for Alzheimer’s disease and because it is a “very safe” supplement it is logical to try it as a prevention for this terrible disease.
5. Curing of arthritis
For those who suffer from this disease know the need to find relief is a constant battle. There are many causes for arthritis – it is not a single disease. When you have joint pain due to arthritis, it is a good idea to look for natural solutions to ease the pain.
Are there any side effects?
The herb itself is pretty safe to use. Only thing to remember is you shouldn’t consume raw or unprocessed form of Shilajit. It may contain heavy metal ions and fungus that could make you sick. Whenever you purchase Shilajit online or from a vendor make sure it is purified and ready to use.
Testing for authenticity and purity
Since there are so many benefits of Shilajit there is a high chance that you may get an adulterated Shilajit. It becomes very important to tests it authenticity.
There are 2 methods that I use to test the authenticity of Shilajit:
1. Testing with mercury
Take a small drop of mercury and mix with one table spoon of pure Shilajit in a bowl. Mix both very well and slowly you will start observing braking of mercury into small particles. Consequently, those small particles will completely dissolve after five minutes. The below video summarizes the process however do not try to that on bare hands as the local seller does as mercury is toxic on skin!
2. Burn it
Pure Shilajit will not burn. Heat Shilajit with a flame. It will bubble and produce an ash. But it WILL NOT BURN!
Do not trust the powder form of Shilajit. They are mostly a rip off. They would barely contain 30% of Shilajit. The rest is all filler. Although it will not harm you but it won’t do any good either! Always remember pure Shilajit is a tar like substance.
How much do I take?
You can take Shilajit with milk. The recommended dose of shilajit is 500 – 1000 mg per day.
